IPL earns Emergency Assistance Award for efforts to restore service after Hurricane Irma

IPL earns Emergency Assistance Award for efforts to restore service after Hurricane Irma

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), was presented yesterday with the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) “Emergency Assistance Award” for its outstanding work assisting customers impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

The award is presented to EEI member companies to recognize an outstanding response in assisting other electric companies in power restoration efforts after service has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI’s Winter Board and CEO Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“On behalf of everyone at IPL, we are honored to be recognized for EEI’s Emergency Assistance Award,” said IPL President and CEO Rafael Sanchez. “We take great pride in serving our customers in Indianapolis and helping our industry colleagues in times of need like after Hurricane Irma.”

For nearly three weeks, IPL crews were part of more than 50,000 workers from across the US and Canada who supported the power industry’s restoration efforts following Hurricane Irma. Line crews from IPL devoted nearly 13,000 hours of assistance primarily in the St. Petersburg, Orlando, and Plantation, Florida areas where they assisted FPL and Duke Energy to restore electrical service.

“When disaster impacts a region, electric companies from across the nation are called on to assist impacted companies in need—mutual assistance is a hallmark of our industry,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “When Hurricane Irma struck, IPL answered the call to help. IPL’s assistance to restore service to impacted customers is a terrific example of mutual assistance in action.”

IPL was also recognized by EEI in 2016 and 2017 for efforts and assistance in restoring service to customers in both Indiana and Michigan following severe winter weather.
