IPL encourages customers to be weather ready during Severe Weather Awareness Week

IPL encourages customers to be weather ready during Severe Weather Awareness Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), is encouraging customers to plan for emergency situations during Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is March 19-24. The goal of this week is to better educate people about the hazards of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and to help everyone be prepared when severe weather occurs.

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the state of Indiana will participate in a statewide tornado drill and test its Emergency Alert System (EAS) on Tuesday, March 20 at 10:15 a.m. Schools, businesses, and households are encouraged to practice their tornado drills and emergency plans at this time.

What can IPL customers do during Severe Weather Awareness Week?

    • Build a Storm Kit. Ensure you gather enough essentials for at least 72 hours and include items such as necessary medicine, water, nonperishable food, flashlight, first aid items, spare clothing, phone chargers, battery-operated radio and extra batteries. Be sure each member of your household knows where the emergency storm kit is located.
    • Develop an Emergency Plan. Do you know what you would do if you lost power for an extended period of time? Have a plan to move yourself and your family – especially those with special medical needs – to an alternate location. Each person living in your household should know where to meet, how you will contact each other and what to do in different scenarios. Learn more about how to form an IPL Storm Squad.
    • Stay Connected. Bookmark IPL’s Outage Information Center on your mobile device for quick and easy access to report outages, view our outage map, safety tips and more.
    • Be safe around power lines. Put safety first, and never touch or go near a downed power line. Always assume it’s energized and STAY AWAY. Keep children and pets away and report it online or call 317.261.8111. If the situation is an emergency, such as a fire, call 911 immediately.

IPL encourages customers to be weather aware and prepared all year long. For more information about staying safe during severe weather events, visit IPLpower.com.
