Get answers to frequently asked questions about AES Indiana Green Power

What are the benefits of the Green Power Option?

Your participation helps support the development of renewable energy sources, which will in turn eventually help reduce our reliance on fossil-fueled power.

Where does the green power originate?

AES Indiana will periodically purchase enough renewable energy to satisfy the prospective needs of our customers choosing this option, balancing the cost with the geographical proximity to our customers. Recent sources have been wind facilities located in the Midwest, including right here in Indiana. AES Indiana purchases the renewable energy in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs.

    How much does it cost?

The premium can be adjusted once a year through a filing with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). It will vary depending upon the source of the renewable energy that AES Indiana purchases. In the past few years, the monthly premium for a typical residential customer enrolled at the 100% level and using 1000 kilowatt-hours of electricity has ranged from $.50 per month to about $5.50 per month.

As of September 1, 2022, the premium for AES Indiana's Green Power Option was adjusted to $0.0055 per kilowatt-hour, an increase from the previous premium of $0.003 per kilowatt-hour.

The premium is added to your AES Indiana bill in addition to the costs normally associated with our standard, regulated rates and charges.

When the Green Power premium changes, we will let you know by putting a message on your monthly bill statement.

AES Indiana's Green Power Option makes it easy and inexpensive for you to support renewable energy. You can participate at one of three levels -- 100%, 50%, or 25% -- of your monthly electric usage (and 10% for commercial/industrial customers).

Estimate how much your Green Power premium might be.

How do I enroll? How do I end my participation?

You can enroll online if you have an AES Indiana online account or you can create one here. Once you have logged in you will see the Green Power Option link on the left side navigation. Then, simply indicate the level at which you wish to participate (25%, 50% or 100% of your monthly electric usage). You may also enroll by calling AES Indiana at 317-261-8222 (residential) or 317-261-8444 (business).

Whenever you wish to end your participation, you may once again use your online account or call us at 317-261-8222 (residential) or 317-261-8444 (business).

Why are customers who voluntarily pay for Green Power charged the Fuel Adjustment Charge?

Customers who opt-in to Green Power pay a small premium in addition to AES Indiana's standard, regulated rate. This premium pays for certified renewable energy credits that offset the environmental impact of electric production from fossil-fuels. Your participation in Green Power shows support for further development of renewable energy sources, which will in turn help accelerate the amount of renewable energy coming onto the grid and reduce our reliance on fossil-fueled power for all customers.
