Investing in our grid for our customers.
Smart Grid is a seven-year plan to invest $1.2 billion in the modernization of AES Indiana’s electric grid. Most of the modernization plan addresses the upgrade and replacement of aging equipment, hardware and other assets. The remaining Smart Grid plan allows AES Indiana to provide customers with new, state-of-the-art equipment and technologies that provide customers with:
- Improved service reliability, efficiency and performance
- Fewer outages
- Improved safety
- Enhanced equipment performance and reliability
- Improved customer experience and communications
AES Indiana's Smart Grid plan was approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) on March 4, 2020.

Investment in AES Indiana's grid
Smart Grid will focus on the improvement of six key areas.
The Smart Grid plan involves replacing outdated infrastructure, some of which is more than 50 years old, with new, modern assets, which will allow AES Indiana to move to a more enabled and modern electric system for customers.
By updating aging infrastructure, the Smart Grid plan can decrease the risk of outages and allow AES Indiana to restore service quicker and more efficiently.
Advanced technology and replacement of older equipment provides safety features that protect our customers and employees.
With smarter technology, AES Indiana can be instantly notified of any outages or service issues, which allows AES Indiana to begin working on a resolution right away while keeping you informed.
New technology will allow AES Indiana to pinpoint location and cause of issues in our infrastructure. This provides us with a better assessment to know what and who it takes to resolve issues.
Moving to a modern grid will enable integration of new technologies, like customer-sited renewables, and will create a grid that can heal itself.
