Fewer outages. Faster restoration. A stronger grid.

AES Indiana’s Smart Grid modernization is a seven-year, $1.2 billion investment strengthening the electric system across the communities we serve. Now in Year 7, these upgrades are delivering measurable reliability improvements while preparing the system to support future energy needs.

Delivering results customers depend on

Fewer outages

In 2025 alone, customers experienced the fewest outages since 2019 as upgraded equipment and automation came online across the system.

Since Year 1, Smart Grid technology has helped prevent 281,297 customer interruptions, reducing the number of customers who lose power when outages occur.

Faster restoration

In 2025 alone, Smart Grid automation automatically restored power for 67,665 customer interruptions, often before a crew arrived.

Since Year 1, Smart Grid automation has automatically restored power for 124,099 customer interruptions.

Stronger in storms

In 2025 alone, Smart Grid automation helped prevent approximately 89,000 customer interruptions during storms and automatically restored power for more than 34,000 customer interruptions.

Since Year 1, Smart Grid automation has helped prevent 157,581 customer interruptions and automatically restored power for more than 63,563 customer interruptions during storm events.

Smart Grid technology helped prevent approximately 152,300 customer interruptions in 2025 alone.

By limiting how far issues spread across the system, Smart Grid investments are helping deliver fewer outages, faster restoration and more predictable service for customers.

Why this work matters

Aging infrastructure

Much of the electric system serving Central Indiana was built decades ago and needed modernization.

Growing demand

Homes, businesses and new technology now place greater demands on the electric grid.

Stronger service

Modernization helps deliver more dependable electric service for customers.

How the grid works now

Stronger equipment

Rebuilt lines, underground cables and upgraded infrastructure make the grid more durable and improve reliability.

Automation

Devices automatically detect issues and reroute power to reduce the number of customers without power at a given time and restore service faster.

Smart meters

Smart meters help AES Indiana detect outages sooner, confirm restoration faster and provide clearer insight into energy usage.

Continuing the work

Smart Grid modernization continues across AES Indiana’s electric system as targeted upgrades are completed through 2026.

The benefits of a stronger, more automated electric system extend well beyond construction. AES Indiana continues investing in a grid that is more reliable, resilient and prepared to serve customers for years to come.
