AES Indiana is committed to decreasing the environmental impact of producing power while also focusing on diversifying the power generation needs of its customers with cleaner, more efficient options to provide safe, reliable and affordable energy.
AES Indiana has invested in new environmental controls at its Petersburg generating station and has converted units from coal to natural gas at its Harding street station to comply with new utility mercury and air toxic standards (MATS) set by the EPA.
The Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission (IURC) and approved AES Indiana's plans on August 15, 2013.
Construction began at the Petersburg facility in the fall of 2013. and now all unit are in compliance with MATS emission standards.
The new environmental controls include:
- Pulse air fabric filter systems (also called a “bag house”)
- Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system upgrades
- Continuous emissions monitoring systems
At Harding Street station, Units 5 and 6 were converted to natural gas as of December 2015. Conversion of unit 7 was completed in early 2016.
