People Behind Your Power: Norv Clontz
June 19, 2024
The people behind your power are people just like you. We live, work and play in Central Indiana. We have families, pets, hobbies, and quirks. We volunteer and strive to make a difference. We are also a part of a dedicated team focused on powering your essential needs.
Meet Norv Clontz, Director of Data Science & Analytics for AES Indiana. Norv is responsible for developing models using data science and AI. He joined AES in January 2024. He’s a business leader, data scientist, and project manager focused on building high-performance analytics teams – and also a swim dad.
Here’s more about Norv:
- According to Norv, in this new world where utilities are racing to digitize, decentralize and decarbonize, the use of analytics is crucial to successful transformation. Utilities are overflowing with data that can be mined and modeled to generate insights benefiting our customers, teammates and shareholders. Norv’s team does math on big data. Their work is challenging, rewarding and never-ending.
- But before “doing math on big data,” Norv’s first job was a busboy at a local family-owned restaurant. Along with typical busboy tasks, he had some unique responsibilities like sweeping out the chicken coop, rescuing peacocks from the roof, and cleaning and hanging country ham.
- When asked to describe himself, Norv said he’s “laconic,” meaning he uses very few words to express himself. While this might come across as casual or unfriendly, those of us at the company who know him understand that this isn't the case.
- Interestingly, he’s also been told he looks like Larry Bird, adding a unique touch to his already distinctive personality.
- Norv is an avid reader. A couple of years ago, some unpublished short stories and sketches by Saki (H.H. Munro) were discovered. As a lifelong fan who has read all Saki’s works, Norv was thrilled. Though the new material wasn't his best, Saki's most entertaining works remain his short stories, which range from satire (“The Story-Teller”) and suspense (“The Open Window”) to horror (“Sredni Vashtar”), often featuring a Twilight Zone-like twist ending.
- Norv is a swim dad and had the privilege of cheering his 17-year-old son, Norvy, on in the 400 and 800 freestyle during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, held in Indianapolis June 15-23. “Driving the ‘Swim Taxi’ up to three times a day, starting at 5: 00 AM, was a challenge,” shared Norv. “However, we're proud to see Norvy develop self-discipline, win school, state, and national championships, swim for Team USA at the Junior World Championships, and now share his passion and knowledge with the next generation, including his brother Edward.”
- At AES, Norv is known for what he refers to as witty one-liners but everyone else calls Dad jokes. He shared, “If I weren’t doing utility analytics, I think I would like to install mirrors. It is something. I could really see myself doing.” (See what he did there?!)
