IPL Earns EEI’s “Emergency Assistance Award” Following Severe Weather in 2016

CHICAGO– Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), was today presented  the “Emergency Assistance Award” during the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI’s) 2016 Annual Convention in Chicago. This award recognizes IPL’s work assisting in power restoration efforts after severe weather events in the winter of 2016.

This award is presented twice per year to EEI member companies to recognize an outstanding response in assisting a neighboring or nearby electric company in power restoration efforts after service has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners of the summer 2016 awards were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process.

IPL’s assistance was instrumental in restoring service to customers in Indiana following Winter Storm Petros in 2016. IPL crews responded rapidly to calls for aid from Northwest Indiana, assisting with recovery operations.  Employees devoted nearly 700 worker-hours of assistance over four days to assist neighboring electric companies. In responding to these severe weather events, crews endured intense snowfall, wind, cold temperatures, and dangerous road conditions to help restore service to customers in three counties across the NIPSCO service territory in Northwest Indiana.

“IPL’s tremendous effort to assist NIPSCO in its time of need illustrates the industry’s commitment to mutual assistance and customer service,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “The dedicated crews who provided aid in the face of dangerous and difficult conditions are greatly deserving of this honor.”
