All AES Indiana customers who install, own and operate their own generating system have the opportunity to reduce their electric bills by generating power with a small-scale solar, wind or hydroelectric energy system. Customers with systems up to 1 MW in size may qualify for AES Indiana’s Excess DG Rate (Rider 16).

Application levels
- Level 1 applications are the most common for more than 90% for residential 0-10 kW. There is no application fee associated with this level.
- Level 2 applications are for 10 kW to 2 MW. These have an additional five days for engineering review. The cost of the application is $60 plus the cost of any network upgrades.
- Level 3 applications are significantly more expensive, require a full impact study and facility study agreement, and will often require some sort of power purchase agreement or PJM WAMPA. The cost is $100 + $2/kW + the cost of network upgrades. Additionally, level 3 applicants must pay for impact and facility studies (pricing will vary). These can be net metering, cogeneration or solo generation. Timeline for processing is six months to a year.
